New Teaching Team Joins UMSL Studio

Dr. Stella Markou and Dr. Joe Welch will take residency at the Artists-in-Training University of Missouri-St. Louis studio beginning October 2017.

Stella Markou joins the AIT program as voice teacher having previously served as voice teacher for Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’ Spring Training program. Dr. Markou is a seasoned performer, featured as a guest artist with the Edinburgh Contemporary Musical Ensemble, Union Avenue Opera, Masterworks Chorale, Dance New Amsterdam Company, University of Nevada Las Vegas Concert Series, Arianna String Quartet, and Nashville Ballet. Equally at home in the realms of oratorio, opera, and recital work, her stage performances include roles from Die Zauberflote, The Turn of the Screw, The Mikado, and The Telephone, as well as numerous masterwork chorales including Orff’s Carmina Burana, Haydn’s Lord Nelson’s Mass, Handel’s Messiah and others.  She is a passionate promoter of new music as well as a frequently sought master teacher, adjudicator, and guest speaker. Dr. Markou has been serving as the Director of Vocal Studies and Opera Theatre at the University of Missouri-St. Louis since 2007.

Joe Welch also joins the AIT program as vocal coach having previously worked with Opera Theatre’s Spring Training program. Dr. Welch’s eclectic performing career has taken him across the United States including solo performances with the Heartland Symphony and Illinois Symphony Orchestras. He has served as music director for Midwest Institute of Opera, Marble City Opera, and Summer Showbiz at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. Recently, Dr. Welch accompanied world-renowned soprano Christine Brewer at the annual Arts & Faith St. Louis concert. Dr. Welch serves as Instructor of Piano at Blackburn College, McKendree University, and St. Charles Community College.
